Copenhagen Quotes

Can you match the five quotes on Copenhagen from today with the person who made the comment?

  1. "If the climate was a bank the rich governments would have already saved it"
  2. "Movements begin with people, not governments,"
  3. "If sea levels are rising the obvious answer is to build roads over them."
  4. "Let's eradicate poverty and bring in climate justice. If capitalism resists we have to do battle with it."
  5. "I'm unable to feel the same sort of hatred for rich people that other people do."
All were said by the following, but which ones by whom?
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California
  • Boris Johnson, Mayor of London
  • Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela
  • Mark Steel, Independent columnist
  • Evo Morales, President of Bolivia

The only one I'm sure of is that only Mark Steel could have said (3). It is a joke after all. Having said that, I once met a guy seriously suggest concreting over the Thames as a solution to London's traffic problems.

On the subject of Copenhagen, I'd like to plug the Stupid Show, live every night on the internet from the Copenhagen talks. Good episode tonight (no.5), with Franny Armstrong getting flirty with my hero George Monbiot.

Please can I be cheeky and have second thoughts?

1 is Arnie, 2 is Evo, 3 is Mark Steel, 4 is Hugo and 5 is Bozza.

Good game, good game...

Well, despite having two goes I declare Strategst the winner!

It was Chavez who compared the climate to the banks, Arnie who talked about how political movements start(!), Mark Steel's gag about paving over the sea, Morales on resisting capitalism and Johnson, in conversation with Monbiot, on why he was ok with the super-wealthy.

I love the idea it was Arnie who suggested paving over the sea, although he seems to be on the left of the Republicans and I'm considering dubbing him an eco-Republican to honour him.

Thanks for that, Jim, but I think I had withdrawn my first go in favour of my second. So I'd better not claim the million dollars prize money.

Instead, please consider donating it to the notional fund for first selecting and then electing a real shining star of the wider Green firmament for Oxford East...someone who can really excite & energise the electorate.

BTW, picking up from your subject of slogans only being really powerful if they don't work out of the mouths of your opponents, I do find it interesting that not only could (did) quote (2) come out of the chiselled mouth of Arnie, but that on second thoughts I could have imagined that he could have said (1) as well. This kind of anti-banker comment enjoys some kind of social licence, as long as it's understood that it's essentially tongue in cheek. But Arnie could never ever have said quote (4).
