This year's national executive elections

During last year's elections to the national executive of the Green Party (GPEx) I posted a number of hustings debates quizzing the candidates with questions put by the Maybe's readers (at least for those posts who were going to be elected via postal ballot). This year I think I'm going to play it differently and make less of an effort to remain neutral.

For those unaware, elections for GPEx posts take place in two stages. Each of the eleven posts that have more than one candidate by the deadline (two days ago) will be elected by postal ballot, nominations for the other posts are re-opened and then elected at September's conference.

The announcement of who's standing will take place tomorrow apparently so we'll have to wait until then to see who is standing for what and whether there are any positions that do not yet have two candidates. It's an important election as the composition of GPEx, especially particular key posts, will determine our performance at the General Election probably the most important election the Greens have ever fought.

Last year there were just three positions that were contested (and the leader post which is only elected every other year so we're spared that this time). I have a feeling we're going to top that this year, which in general is a good thing. Let's hope the quality of candidates is high shall we!

You'll be lucky... I'm hoping that it will done by wednesday, perhaps tuesday at the earliest. They have to go to party office to check that all the memberships are in order and there's none of that on the weekend...

Jim,

10 years down the line, will you be "King Maker" or leader?

:)

My ambition is to be a small fish in the largest possible pond rather a big 'un in a puddle.

I guess that means I'm happy to be neither as long as I'm contributing to something worthwhile. My worst nightmare is being leader of a small and insignificant groupescule - so I expect that will be what happens knowing my luck :(

Once a document gets uploaded, and at least one member of SOC says my email looks ok, I'll send the nominations out. In theory it could be this evening.

Is there a list of candidates anywhere now? Just back from holiday in Somerset. It rained a lot...

Just two posts to be conducted by postal ballot this time.

No one wants to be responsible for elections this year - can't say I blame them!

A. GREEN PARTY EXECUTIVE (GPEX) POSTAL BALLOT

For two GPEx posts there are two or more candidates and so these will be going to a postal ballot of all members. RON will also be an option on these ballots.

CHAIR: 'Jayne Forbes', 'Rayyan Mirza', 'Matthew Wootton'

EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS CO-ORDINATOR: 'Tracy Dighton-Brown', 'Rupert Read & Jason Kitcat' (job-share)

B. GPEX POSTS FOR WHICH NOMINATIONS WILL REOPEN
For the following five GPEx posts only one valid nomination was received.

EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY CO-ORDINATOR: 'Polly Lane'
FINANCE CO-ORDINATOR: 'Chris Haine'
POLICY CO-ORDINATOR: 'Matt Follett & Maria Iacovou' (job share)
INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS CO-ORDINATOR: 'Natalie Bennett'
PUBLICATIONS CO-ORDINATOR: 'Edward Milford'

No valid nominations were received for: CAMPAIGNS CO-ORDINATOR, ELECTIONS CO-ORDINATOR, MANAGEMENT CO-ORDINATOR, INTERNATIONAL CO-ORDINATOR, or LOCAL PARTY SUPPORT CO-ORDINATOR

Well, I gather the Elections bod wants to defect to finance.

The grapevine tells me that some people may have collected signatures but not submitted, so hopefully they'll bring them to conference.

Too much like hard work this internal politicking.

Yeah - there were a couple of gaps where I'd been expecting names to be because I knew they'd been collecting sigs. I assumed they'd changed their minds but you may be right, they might be holding fire til conference, which seems odd to me but fine I suppose.

I thought when the process opened that elections would be highly contested as they'd been a lot of dissatisfaction with the previous guy's abilities, but it turns out even he didn't want the job!
