The modern woman: Sarah Palin

In the modern world a woman is expected to be simply everything.

A beauty queen

"Rush Limbaugh... exulted, “We’re the ones with a babe on the ticket”"

Alternatively some think "Sarah Palin is to the movement for women's equality what Clarence Thomas is to civil rights. She's an extremist and an enemy to the cause that has been fought on her behalf."

A jock

Palin (number 22) "earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda" because of her intense play. She played the championship game despite a stress fracture in her ankle, hitting a critical free throw in the last seconds. Palin, who was also the head of the school Fellowship of Christian Athletes, would lead the team in prayer before games." *

She even named her first born Track.

An NRA gun enthusiast

"We hunt as much as we can, and I'm proud to say our freezer is full of wild game we harvested here in Alaska."

An advocate of backward ideologies

"She is a reform-minded woman who will give all Americans, born and unborn, the authentic leadership they deserve.” See also, and this, and also here, oh and then there's this.

A defender of human life

She says she's as "pro-life as any candidate can be." She's just a clean living, gun totting mom, who thinks same sex couples don't really fit "that traditional definition, marriage between one man and one woman" so should be denied the same rights.

Who really takes to personal power

Like the investigation "that Palin, her aides and her husband had pressured Monegan to fire a state trooper who went through a divorce with the governor's sister." Add in a dose of witness tampering and we're done.

"Palin initially denied that she or anyone in her administration had ever pressured Monegan to fire the trooper, but this summer acknowledged more than a half a dozen contacts over the matter, including one phone call from a Palin administration official to a state police lieutenant." *

A whizz on foreign affairs

That's right. She's even been abroad. Once. In the run up to her being announced as McCain's VP.

"Debating foreign policy with Joe Biden? What's she going to do? Hit him with her briefing book? If Palin has two thoughts about foreign policy, she's managed to keep them to herself. Ditto health care. National energy policy. Fiscal policy. You could make a long, long list, but I'll stop there. She's going to need a lot of handlers feeding her a lot of talking points, and she's going to have to hope that the discussion only goes about yay-deep." *

Who just loves to get out into the environment and kill it

When she isn't killing things in the great outdoors, she advocates drilling in it, particularly the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve *

"Sarah Palin, Alaska’s Republican governor, claims that giving polar bears protection under the Endangered Species Act will delay offshore oil and gas exploration. “The decision to list the polar bear was not based on the best scientific data available,” *

"A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I'm not one though who would attribute it to being man-made. " *

And now vice-President too

Before being selected she did wonder what the vice president actually does "But as for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question."

Even if she had all the "right" policies, she'd still be a 20-month governor from a very small state. Heck, Denver is 3 1/2 times as large as Alaska in population. Obama would have been laughed out of town if he had appointed Denver's mayor as his VP choice.

Palin and off-shore drilling: perhaps this is why Obama didn't choose anyone from Virginia as his VP candidate.

That link doesn't work, for some reason.

And her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant now...and, I hear from long-time residents of AK, that she is not well-liked there: mining over fishing mentality.

When the buzz of McCain's "maverick" choice wears off, Palin will be a disaster for McCain. The only positive change she will have brought to his campaign is that she has re-energized the conservative base of the Republican Party.

I think the election will be close, which is why I have decided to vote for Obama. Florida is far too critical to risk losing. However, I don't believe that McCain will gain any serious ground in the coming weeks because of Palin. The opportunity for disaster is high.

Yeah, big government and high taxes is the RIGHT CHOICE. Screw hard work, I want to sit on my ass and drink till morning EVERY DAY.

Yes, unpleasant right wing views that are meant to PROTECT and PRESERVE the constitution and PREVENT the government from attaining too much power, which ANYONE with at least one brain cell can tell you leads to extreme corruption and oppression. Left wing views are SCARY.

As it happens D, Bush has presided over a corrosion of the constitution and big state centralisation. Obama has talked about community and people working together because the government isn't going to sort out all your problems for you.

Anyone who thinks the Republicans are about ensuring the government doesn't get too much power must have been on Mars the last eight years.

Corruption and oppression have been Bush's watch words - that's why America just did the right thing in voting to sweep all that shit away.
