Political awards

It's that time of year again, when they open up the public nominations for the Channel Four Political awards.

My nominee speaking at a rally during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and GazaThe rules are simple "Tell us in 100 words or fewer WHY you've chosen your nominee, and our panel of judges will draw up a shortlist based on your entries." The figure has to come from Britain I'm afraid so we can't nominate Hugo Chavez or try to give Castro one last Xmas present.

Here's mine: "I'm nominating Caroline Lucas as the Most Inspiring Political Figure of 2006. Lucas has been able to successfully fuse green politics with tireless, internationalist campaigning for social justice.

"As someone who has had a long term commitment to the environment, rather than leaping aboard the issue in an attempt to get votes, Lucas is one of the few politicians who has been able to keep her commitment to radical politics whilst engaging with the structures of government."

Who's yours?

That's a tough one. Is nominating giving the prize to no one an option?

No it isn't - and unless you're saying that no one has done anything politically worth while (which is wrong) it isn't very constructive either...

:)
