Sunday Quiz - Who said it?

It’s good to have days for things – Sunday's tend top be 'no money day' for me where I "pretend" I have no money (which isn't hard) and it helps me save. I used to have a no trousers day but, you know, that sort of thing is very difficult to maintain. Anyway, perhaps I'll make Sunday quiz day on the blog... we'll see how it goes.

This week can you identify the famous person who came out with each of the ten quotes below? Some are more difficult than others I think – when you think you know the answer, or you’ve given up, hover the cursor over the icon and the answer will appear – magic!

Ghandi1. “What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?”

Fidel Castro2. “They talk about the failure of socialism but where is the success of capitalism in Africa, Asia and Latin America?”

Alan Bennett, I wonder if anyone got that - tough one3. “We started off trying to set up a small anarchist community, but people wouldn't obey the rules.”

Mussolini (sorry)4. “Every anarchist is a baffled dictator”

Benjamin Franklin5. “There never was a good war or a bad peace.”

Very apt right now - Churchill6. “There are a terrible lot of lies going about the world, and the worst of it is that half of them are true.”

Nelson Mandela7. “Communists have always played an active role in the fight by colonial countries for their freedom, because the short-term objects of Communism would always correspond with the long-term objects of freedom movements.”

Mr big brain brain himself – Albert Einstein8. “He who joyfully marches to music rank and file, has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.”

Marx9. “Sell a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man how to fish, you ruin a wonderful business opportunity.”

Sylvia Pankhurst10. “The emancipation of today displays itself mainly in cigarettes and shorts. There is even a reaction from the ideal of an intellectual and emancipated womanhood, for which the pioneers toiled and suffered, to be seen in painted lips and nails, and the return of trailing skirts and other absurdities of dress which betoken the slave-woman's intelligent companionship.”

So what was your score? No cheating!

I got ZERO, but enjoyed the Marx joke very much.

Oooo I'm surprised at that - some are pretty hard but I thought a few were guessable - but then again it's probably easier when you know the answers!

Do you know when pankhurst said that about emancipation?

When she was still a socislist, or after she had gone all mystical and Haile Selase?

I only got one. Which was nelson mandela, I think the context was a speech praising the Cubans for their role in the Angolan war. Am i right?

On the mandela quote its from 'long road to freedom' but i forget the exact context - i have in my head the cp's involvement in the anc - but that may just be my imagination.

The pankhurst quotation which really tickles me for some reason is from David Mitchell, "The Fighting Pankhursts" and i think it's late twenties...
