The Libs and Tories were hammered, but it wasn't a particularly brilliant result for Labour, only half what they got in 1997.

The other big story is that turnout was only around 37%...

I know we've debated this before, but what "alternative" to the cuts were the electors of Barnsley Central offered. Disaffected voters on the right clearly switched to UKIP and to a lesser degree the BNP. As it stood Labour had a very easy ride, there was no left alternative. Yes I know that Barnsley would not be described as fertile territory for the Green Party etc. Just left feeling that the alternative to cuts in the public sector was not made.
I suppose the Lib Dems got it right in one sense - the Conservatives were third in Barnsley.
